Super Yacht Building Academy

The Netherlands is the market leader in luxury superyacht building, a sector full of technology and craftsmanship. Hull builders, especially in Rotterdam-Rijnmond and Drechtsteden, make steel or aluminum parts for superyachts. Four leading companies – Shipyard Slob, Mercury Yacht Construction, Zwijnenburg Shipyard and Bayards – are working together with Da Vinci College and Metalent on a new specialist course, Cascobouw Superyachten under the name Super Yacht Building Academy (SYBA), to retain expertise in this sector (www.SYBA.nl).

For seven months I have been following my apprenticeship at Shipyard Slob and I am happy with my choice. The supervision is excellent and my colleagues are always ready to help me if I have questions. My BBL training as a Production Technician is a perfect fit for the work here and I learn something new every day.

After my arrival in the Netherlands, I started an MBO education, which I combined with working at Scheepswerf Slob in 2018. What started as an apprenticeship grew into a career: from apprentice to welder and then to Quality control. Every day I work with pleasure and together with my colleagues I dedicate myself to the highest quality.

I have been working at Slob Shipyard for 13 years now. My career started as an apprentice ironworker and for the past three years I have been part of the Technical Department. My learning period here was instructive and enjoyable and the nice working atmosphere certainly contributed to that.

What to expect?

For the MBO training in superyacht hull construction, you have a training place at one of the participating shipyards, where you work an average of 3 days a week. In addition, you will receive 2 days of training per week, consisting of theory lessons and practical training, which is specifically aimed at the hull construction of superyachts.
